Mind over matter

A few months ago, we took our son to the Montreal Science Center in the old port.  We’ve been going every year since our son was two and we all love it. As we were making our way through the various exhibits, we came across a rather strange contraption. A longish line of people stood and stared as they waited for their turn. This, of course, peaked our curiosity and like good little lab rats, we made our way to the end of the line.  We observed a young boy sitting on a stool, his forehead pressed to a metal bar of sorts and he was staring at a ping pong ball resting at the bottom of a clear tube that was about 7 feet tall.

We looked and looked and looked but nothing was happening. The next person took a turn and again, nothing. The third person sat down and by now, Francis and I were making jokes at how there must be a hidden camera somewhere.  Then, like magic, the ping pong ball started to hover in the tube and slowly it rose to about 4 and a half feet. We were all flabbergasted of course and everyone in the lineup got really silent. The ball fell to the bottom after a second or two and the boy stood up. Clearly he was amazed and baffled by what he had just done.  Our excitement grew as we became even more eager to try it out for ourselves. Several people went before us but no one managed to make the ball move.

Loik took his turn first. You have to imagine our boy: he was too little to sit properly on the stool and had to kneel to press his head against the metal bar. Believe it or not, within 10 seconds his little ping pong ball rose to about 5 feet and hovered there for at least 10 seconds. People were in shock behind us. We were in shock too!

My turn came next. I closed my eyes and pressed my forehead to the metal plate as others had done before me. I wondered if I’d develop acne or something as a result but that was not the point…. I tried to clear my mind as best I could and just visualized that the ball was floating at eye level.  I opened my eyes to check but the ball was still motionless on the bottom.  I took a deep breath and closed my eyes again. If Loik can do it,  surely I can do it too. I felt a little pressure from the crowd behind me.  I blocked out those thoughts, took a deep breath and I started to relax. I kept breathing deeply and chanting the Om mantra in my mind.  In my minds eye, I saw the ball at eye level.  It’s rising! I heard Francis. I opened my eyes and saw that the ball was exactly where I had imagined it and then it fell.

Francis was next and boy was he raring to go.  He sat down with a thump and you could almost feel his will and energy. Within a second, the ping pong ball shot up to about 6 feet and hovered there. Everybody gasped ! I wasn’t surprised. Francis has tremendous energy that builds in him and swirls around him. He told me afterwards that in his mind he just said : This thing is going to shoot up.… and it did.  Loik told us that he thought of nothing at all.

Of course we were all quite excited by this experiment. Driving home, we were still talking about it. We joked at how maybe it was all a trick and there really was a candid camera type thing going on. We rationalized that since it was the Science Center, it was probably a legit experiment and wondered how the whole thing worked.

All of a sudden; it hit me.  I said to Francis - Do yo realize what just happened? Do you realize that without any sort of training and even without understanding how the contraption worked all three of us were able to move matter with our minds?

He looked at me and we all let that sink in.

Do you realize the possibilities? Imagine if we trained our minds and focused on one single goal, we could accomplish anything that we previously thought was impossible! Are you ready for that reality? Well, you should be.  Toy companies have come out with a hundred dollar version of that amazing invention. AWESOME.  The future is now! Have a look at the video below and read the article on the Washington Post.
