Shawn was a 27 year old graduate student on scholarship at Notre-Dame University when he experienced a major pivotal moment in his life. After hearing a speech by Dr. Jeffrey Sachs on how to end poverty in the world, he withdrew from grad school, liquidated his savings, and began his epic journey across 4 continents to help the poorest of the poor, one small action at a time. Working alone, he is making a difference in the world and documenting his efforts on YouTube in the hope of inspiring others to rise to the occasion as well.
He has been on the road for the last 18 months, his life savings are expired but he’s still inspired to keep going. Right now he is relying on borrowing from his family to fund his amazing project. Donations to his project are not used for living expenses, airfare, or equipment costs. Shawn is looking for some sort of corporate sponsorship to keep the project going.
His core belief is that we have the potential be the generation that ends extreme poverty.
I have a lot of admiration and respect for people like Shawn and Tim whose calling is so great that it causes them to stop what they are doing, make a 180 degree turn and devote their life to their cause.
While I don’t believe we all meant quit our lives and travel around the world to help the poor, we can all contribute something to end extreme poverty. We can volunteer, donate, share, trade, write letters to our elected officials, use our spending power as a bargaining chip and above all stop being hoarders. I can’t help but think that if I have too much, someone, somewhere doesn’t have enough.
