What can we learn about creativity from children?

I was at the dentists office this morning for my son’s first visit. Thankfully, I found a wonderful kids dentist and so this morning my son played in a cool playroom before he went in for is appointment. I was sitting outside the playroom but could see the kids playing and drawing on a chalk board.

I watched how each child would take a piece of chalk and just draw for the pleasure of drawing. No torture about what they would draw. No hesitation, no erasing, no self-criticism about their work. Just spontaneous, joyful, creativity. When the drawing was done, the kids would stand back, appreciate their work and then … erase it … and start a new one.

Kids are awesome. They know how to just enjoy the moment and let their creativity flow. They don’t try to own what they’ve done by keeping copies because they are not afraid they won’t be able to reproduce their work… they know they have all the power to create whatever their little hearts desire.

As adults, we should nurture that spirit in our children. We should also learn from them and reconnect with our own capacity for spontaneous, joyful, creative expression.
