2005, Planet Earth.
I am a product of North American society. I’m a part of the middle class… I’m in my mid 30′s, of average height and I’ve achieved moderate success in business. You could call me an average Joanna… I get up everyday and I work hard to earn a living. I consume too much, have too much debt, I eat too much, I don’t sleep or exercise enough. I think too much, complain too much and I don’t take action in the face of injustice nearly as much as I should.
As I get older, and especially since I’ve become a mother, I realize just how fortunate I am. I live in Canada. A peaceful country with an overwhelming abundance of natural resources. I am healthy. My family is healthy. I’ve never known war or famine. I’ve never lived through an earthquake, a volcano eruption, a Tsunami, a hurricane or a tornado. (Although I have gone through -40 degree weather
) I have a roof over my head. Food on my table. A world of opportunities at my doorstep. Free speech. You name it, we’ve got it here in Canada. And yet, so many of us are depressed… struggling… unhappy… whiny…. conflicted etc.
As we truly embrace the information age, we are constantly reminded, even though we’ve always known it, that our lifestyle is not the norm for everyone on our little planet. I for one can’t stand still any longer and just keep consuming… living the daily grind and watching the misery unfold on TV. But what can I do to make a difference?
This blog is a space where I will explore and discover solutions on how I can do just that.
